Went downtown to do 20 shots for the final project today. I wanted to go back to Oakland after visiting the first time, but it wasn't as enchanting the second time and there were a lot of people there today. Oakland is a landmark, not just a cemetery, so it made sense that it was pretty full today. I was taking my first few shots, and these people walked past me. I thought it was yet another dog because I heard all of these keychains and I turned to see if it was, in fact, a dog and owner but it was people. One man was all, "She's taking pictures!!" in a gaspshockgasp voice like I was pissing on the graves or something, and another man was like, "Well, they said they can take pictures of the statues blah blah blah," I don't remember the rest because I started re-framing my shot. The Shocked Man was eyeing me for whatever reason, the only reason I could really think is me being a black girl with an afro and this being a group of white people and a certain devisive event happening in two days tearing people apart. He looked as if he'd never seen a Black person before. I was a bit amused, but kinda wary of shooting for the rest of the day if people were going to be that conscious about it. One of the great things about being in a graveyard is silence, yeah?
On the way to Centennial, I had to go past Philipps Arena and there was a Thrashers game there tonight so it was pretty crowded. On the streets, there were these two people standing near the crowd, and this man was preaching about Revelation really really loudly. Everyone was walking past and just ignoring them, but it was really interesting to me. I've never passed that type of stuff on the street. Always heard about it, but never passed it before. I walked right in front of him and caught the word 'Babylon' really loudly as I went by. I often wonder what these people will do if there is no apocolypse.
Here are the best shots out of the day from my visit to Oakland Cemetery this afternoon. Any critique is welcome, since this is for a class assignment [composition] and I need help choosing which shots to print. We have to print four. Any other comments are welcome as well. The mosaleum was pretty cool. Strangely enough, in the back, there was spouting water. I guess it was from the melted snow.
There was also a creepy moment as I saw that I had walked right over a rather sunken-in grave. There was also a very cool (and huge!) grave for the leader of the Anti-Saloon League:This is the cemetery my grandfather is buried in. I went there Christmas Day with my aunt, who's also an amateur photographer.
The grave this is on is always covered in statues, toys, plants, and candles. It's a teenage boy who died in a car accident and his family's never recovered. Sometimes they spend the entire day at his grave, sitting in lawnchairs.
No headstone yet, and the grass has just barely started to grow back in.
This is that boy's grave. See all the stuff on it?
Hey Jesus... Happy Birthday.
It's Jesus' friend Buddha! My aunt and I actually found this statue behind the grave, as if hidden. Maybe the family didn't want to offend the Catholics. This guy served in Vietnam, I wonder if he became interested in Buddhism there.
There have been some great contributions, and very few who have strayed ‘off topic.’
I'm looking forward to enjoying all of your great posts in 08.

We waited for a night with a full moon and got there on sunset. But we didn't know that moonrise is at different times each day! The moon didn't come out until we were on our way home!
It's a small local cemetary dating back maybe 50 or so years.
I love the really old stuff which works so well with gritty black and white.
This has been on my 2-do list for quite a bucket now. Seems I have less and less time for myself since mum stopped doing my laundry and the business took off (hey, not complaining there though) but I aim to change that, at least a smidgen.
Some of you probably already know me from youtube, facebook, livejournal, or myspace, or maybe you've seen some of my Photography here and about ~ or maybe not ~ but I decided it was time I had a real blog and I heard from everyone that the go to place to blog was Vox ~ so here I am! I pretty much look like the computer-generated "pixelation" you see, but I'll get a real photo up soon. I spend so much time taking pics of others, I sometimes forget to update my own face file.
As for blogging, I'll try my utmost to come up with something other than my usual jet lag, falling tripod, or funny venue stories to entertain, but I'm really here to have a place to meet some new friends, network and story with other people as interested in photography as I am, and well, just have a place to write for a change.
So, that's my introduction ~ and I did it without pics this time. Look forward to meeting you professional bloggers I've heard so much about.
